Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary in Australia?
Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by 52. For a full-time 38-hour week, $40 an hour is $40 × 38 × 52 = $79,040 a year before tax. Casual loading, penalty rates and unpaid leave can change the real figure, so use the calculator with your actual hours.
What is casual loading and how does it affect my annual pay?
Casual employees typically get a 25% loading on the base hourly rate in place of paid leave. Tick 'Casual' to see your base rate without the loading. Tax is calculated on what you actually earn, so loading doesn't change the tax maths — but weeks worked do, so set 'Weeks worked / year' for irregular work.
How much tax do I pay on my salary in Australia?
Australian residents pay no tax on the first $18,200, then 15% (16% in 2025–26) on $18,201–$45,000, 30% on $45,001–$135,000, 37% on $135,001–$190,000 and 45% above $190,000. A 2% Medicare levy is added on top for most residents.
What is the difference between gross and net salary?
Gross salary is what you earn before deductions. Net (take-home) salary is what lands in your bank account after income tax, the Medicare levy and any HELP repayment are withheld.
Is superannuation included in my salary?
Not unless your contract says 'package' or 'total remuneration'. The super guarantee is 12% of ordinary time earnings, paid by your employer on top of your salary. Tick 'Amount includes super' if your figure is a total package and the calculator will back it out.
How is a HELP / HECS repayment calculated?
From 2025–26 HELP repayments use marginal rates: nothing up to $67,000, 15 cents per dollar between $67,001 and $125,000, then $8,700 plus 17 cents per dollar up to $179,285, and 10% of your total repayment income above that. Repayments are collected through your tax return and PAYG withholding.
Does this calculator include tax offsets or the Medicare levy surcharge?
It includes the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) and the Medicare levy low-income reduction. It does not include the Medicare levy surcharge, other offsets, salary sacrifice or work-related deductions, so your actual tax return outcome may differ.
Which financial year does the calculator use?
You can pick 2026–27 (1 July 2026 – 30 June 2027) or 2025–26. The 2026–27 rates reflect the legislated cut of the 16% bracket to 15%.
